It all started when…

My work is rooted in a subject I keep returning to: the human body. As corporeal creatures, the human body is a classic artistic subject for obvious reasons. My own interest incorporates the perspective of a tattooed, queer, transgender man who has experienced pregnancy and childbirth. Experiences ranging from the universal to exquisitely individual have awarded me a unique understanding of the body as a site of transformation.

The very nature of queerness being uncontainable, my practice has broadened to include a vast array of mediums, from detailed colored pencil renderings of my testosterone-activated body hair, to paper maché sculpture that emphasize the translucence of skin over the top of blue veins. The scale and acute vulnerability of this self-portraiture invites the viewer into the role of two overlapping investigators: the Lover, and the Scientist. These two archetypes bring the lens I am interested in: simultaneous wonder and horror at the complexity of the human body. I love the slipperiness of definitions of beauty and ugliness, and my work playfully engages with this boundary. As everyday my understanding of queerness seems to shift and expand, so my body continues to age on its journey towards inevitable death. So let’s rock n roll. And by rock n roll I mean engage in a creative practice that is intrinsically human and endlessly curious.
